Pets As Pest Control
Now when it comes to pets in the garden I am not a huge fan but i wouldn’t say that there are no pets that are suitable for the job.
To start I would not recommend dogs. Though they can be a good deterrent from certain pests dogs are typically too rough for plants. Chewing on stems and peeing on the soil are not ideal and this happens quite frequently especially in the puppy stages. Cats are okay for the job but they do not come without risks.
For starters if you have an indoor garden with an indoor cat they often chew on the stem and leaves that they can reach which isn’t ideal. Now you may ask what if my cat is an outdoor cat? Well that is the ideal situation for using a cat as pest control but it also means that you shouldn’t let them into the garden ever. Not just because they will chew on the stems and leaves.
Outdoor cats will tend to get mites and other pests crawling on them from their outdoor adventures. If you let them into your grow space at that point they will leave some of those critters in your grow space.
Critters like mites, ants, or aphids. These are some of the common pests you may find in your grow space.
So to some it up if you are planning on having a pet as pest control i would recommend an outdoor cat that you keep guarding the perimeter and not the actual garden. If your grow space is outside they will keep most pests like moles and birds away but in my opinion there are better options than having a pet guard your garden.
